Go for the Citrus – Clementines and Tangerines

clementinesThis time of year, amidst the winter blues, take a chance in the supermarket and bring back memories of summertime. Instead of going for the large oranges, go for the smaller, juicier, sweeter versions found in the clementines and tangerines. While these citrus snacks aren’t prevalent in the summertime, they comfort us throughout the holidays and into the winter season. In many markets they can be found almost up until springtime. Most times they are sold in large quantities (roughly 20-30) in crates, but also may be sold by the piece.Don’t be cornered into only eating them alone, as a snack. Instead, try to incorporate them into your regular recipes and favorites, as well as trying new twists as well. Anywhere you would use a normal citrus fruit you could easily substitute a clementine or tangerine.  Try using all parts of the citrus, too. Remember to use the zest to enhance baking or stir-fry, or simply freeze for another use. Squeeze some juice into your favorite smoothie, alcoholic beverage, or sauce with your favorite seafood. All in all, don’t shy away from this smaller, sweeter version of the staple orange.
